Delhi Travel Guide: in New Delhi

New Delhi, India is a huge, sprawling metropolis. An ancient city with a rich past, Delhi is one of the most historic cities on earth. It also has a very lively present as the capital of the greatest democracy in the world. There are so many things to do in Delhi that it is even hard to know how to start a Delhi travel guide and what travel tips to Delhi it can offer visitors and tourists who want to explore and experience the best sights, hotels, attractions, landmarks and cool, fun things to do. Note: New Delhi is also called simply Delhi or Dilli in Hindi.

So here are my tips for the best things to do in Delhi - based on 13 years of living in Delhi on and off. There are really many things to do in Delhi, from a street food tour of Old Delhi, to watching the sunrise at the Gate of India, to visiting three

Why is Delhi worth visiting?

Most visitors to India land either in Delhi or in Mumbai (Bombay). And it is from these cities that they get their first impressions. I was lucky, from my first day in India I stayed with an Indian family in South Delhi. The real Dilli singers helped me see the beauty and essential charm of the city, and provided the keys to discovering the hidden treasures that most tourists miss. I liked this city and I hope you will give it a chance too.

Personally, I think Delhi is a great city. Besides being my inspiring and endlessly fascinating. Delhi is an eternal city. It is not only the capital of modern India, but also at least seven previous civilizations, each of which has left its mark of monuments. It is also a very green city with wide, green boulevards; and is the cultural heart and political center of the country. Moreover, Delhi is known as an entertainment garden for gastronomy and a shopper's paradise. In other words, there are many things to do in Delhi and many reasons to love the city.

Where to stay in Delhi

Low-rise Delhi stretches across many fascinating areas, from Connaught Place, a Rally-era shopping center, to the crowded markets of Old Delhi; and from the fashionable Hauz Khas enclave to elegant bungalows in the center of New Delhi. There are many places to stay and many neighborhoods to explore, but somehow most tourists end up in Pahar Ganj (near New Delhi Railway Station), Karol Bagh, or Connaught Place (known locally as CP), the commercial center of Delhi. There are a lot of cheap hotels here and the nightlife can be fun and exciting, but there are also many touts, scammers, hustlers, cheats and even worse. For foreigners, especially new to India, walking down the street can feel like a foraging shark

Personally, I prefer to stay where I'm treated like more than a walking wallet. My top advice in Delhi is to stay away from the hustle and bustle and avoid sharks. Instead, stay in the green, upscale neighborhoods of downtown New Delhi, South Delhi, or Mehrauli. In South Delhi I rarely get fooled as it is not a tourist area: when I get in my car they pay me the same price as my local neighbors. Search for accommodation in houses, guesthouses, hostels, small boutique hotels. There is a lot to choose from and more come up every day.
